Shibari & Kinbaku in Karlsruhe, Germany
Shibari is used in the Western world as a synonym for the Japanese art of rope bondage. It describes a special way in which two people experience closeness and intimacy through the medium of rope. The consensual interaction between the two people involved plays an important role. The active person is called the rigger, and the passive person is called the rope bunny or rope bottom. WolfRope prefers the Japanese terms Shibarite (縛り手 = rigger) and Ukete (受け手 = receiving hand).
In Western countries, Shibari is often described as being directly linked to sexuality, yet Shibari can be much more. Depending on the intention of the rope couple, Shibari can mean very different things. Beautiful patterns and artfully arranged bodies can highlight the beauty of Ukete. Closeness and distance, tenderness and intensity can evoke feelings in Ukete never known before.
Many Ukete associate being tied with security, letting go, freedom and the feeling of sinking into themselves. These sensations often arise because Ukete hands over responsibility and trusts Shibarite completely.
For Shibarite, tying is often a kind of meditation, a non-verbal communication with Ukete and a creative process that evokes reactions and emotions – until the souls of Ukete and Shibarite merge.
